City council decides on climate neutrality by 2035

The city of Oldenburg is pursuing an ambitious climate goal and wants to become climate-neutral by 2035. This was decided by the city council at its meeting on April 26, 2021. The decision was preceded by an intensive discussion process around the Fridays for Future guiding motion. Numerous measures are required to become climate neutral. Some approaches are already being implemented, such as the promotion of photovoltaic systems, the energy-efficient refurbishment of old buildings or cargo bicycles. Other new measures emerge from the Fridays for Future lead application and, in addition to energy, construction and mobility, are also assigned to the fields of action of nutrition/consumption, companies and public relations. The new climate protection target will also require many additional approaches, for which the administration will now complete the catalog of measures.
